From Broome County Executive Patrick J. Brennan:
Broome County Executive Patrick Brennan and Broome County Emergency Services Director Brett Chellis participated in a conference call this afternoon with officials from NYSEG and municipal officials in a four county area to learn about power restoration efforts in NYSEG’s Binghamton Division.
Thursday’s storm brought 58 miles per hour winds to Broome and surrounding counties and left more than 24,000 customers without power in NYSEG’s Binghamton Division, which includes the counties of Broome, Tioga, and parts of the counties of Cortland, and Chenango. Though thousands of services were restored on Friday, another thunderstorm on Friday evening left an additional 6,000 customers without electricity in NYSEG’s Binghamton Division.
NYSEG informed Brennan and municipal leaders today that they had 124 crews working on transmission lines, sub-stations, distribution lines, and service connections and an additional 28 tree crews working on Saturday to repair 36 broken poles and 419 downed wires in the utility’s Binghamton Region.
Brennan said, “weather depending, NYSEG expects service to be restored to all households and businesses by Tuesday, May 31st but hopefully most people will have their service restored between today, Sunday, and Monday. They informed me that their crews will continue working throughout the day Sunday and Monday to complete the task of restoring power to families and businesses in their four-county division,” said Brennan.
NYSEG has purchased truck loads of bottled water and dry ice and Broome County has arranged for distribution of commodities at six main distribution points.
West Windsor Fire Company, 8 Karla Drive, Windsor
Chenango Bridge Fire Company Station 1, 13 Kattelville Road
Town of Binghamton Fire Station, 457 Park Avenue
City of Binghamton Fire Station, 39 West State Street, (dry ice only at this location)
Appalachin Fire Department, 230 Pennsylvania Avenue
Newark Valley Fire Department 7151 State Route 38
Also, in Broome County, the Windsor Fire Company at 124 Main Street is providing drinking water and ice in limited quantities.
Shipments of water and dry ice were received late Friday evening, are expected again on Saturday evening, and are expected again on Sunday mid-day to early afternoon. Residents who are without power are encouraged to call the NYSEG call center at 800-572-1131. The call center should be able to provide information about what distribution centers have supplies and when. The distribution of dry ice and drinking water is intended for people who are without electricity and who are without water. If your home or business is operating with electricity or under alternate power, please do not collect the scarce supply of dry ice. Similarly, if your home or business has a municipal water supply that does not require electricity, please do not collect the scarce supply of drinking water.
“I am thankful for the efforts of NYSEG to restore power to affected areas as quickly as possible given the conditions. As well, I am thankful for the efforts of first responders, county and town highway personnel, and others who have been managing this crisis since Thursday evening,” Brennan said.
