The number of Broome County deaths from drug overdoses has continued to show improvement over recent years. For the first nine months of 2018, there have been 22 confirmed overdose deaths. This compares favorably to 60 in 2016, and 55 in 2017. In the third quarter, there were 9 deaths. 8 were males, and there was 1 female death. The average age was 41. All deaths were attributed to heroin or opioids. Broome County currently runs 9 treatment programs, including, Treatment Alternative to Prosecution, which offers individuals with substance abuse issues the opportunity to receive treatment in place of prosecution of their charges — pre-arrest, at arrest, and post-arrest.
