Broome County law makers have approached the New York State legislature with a proposal in regards to stricter regulations for sex offenders. Legislators in Broome County argue that it should be up to local municipalities to set regulations when it comes to where sex offenders can live. This proposal comes just after the New York State Court of Appeals ruled that these regulations are a state decision in February. Under current state-mandated regulations, the only residency restriction on registered sex offenders is that a level three sex offender cannot live within a thousand feet of a school or park. There are currently no restrictions for level one and level two sex offenders.
