Following three major storms, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that as much as $500 million could be coming to help communities prepare and recover from future flooding. The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program would provide towns and non-profit organizations with funding to help local governments protect and strengthen infrastructure and services. The Governor noted that New York has been working to ensure it’s better prepared to protect its citizens, and that this program is another step toward more resilient communities.
The grant program will be available statewide, but especially to counties that were declared to be in states of emergency during Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee, or Superstorm Sandy.
Non-profits and local officials are encouraged to develop proposals in the form of letters of intent to take part in the program.
