50 FEMA Homes Nearing Demolition

It’s been almost two and a half years since the flood of 2011 ravaged so many homes in our area, but on Wednesday, several homes left uninhabitable in the Town of Union took one more step toward demolition. The Town of Union Board approved four bids on Wednesday for demolition and site clearance, along with air sampling and monitoring, all part of the demolition process. The process will demolish 50 FEMA buyout homes in West Corners, Endwell, and Westover. SJB Services of Hamburg will be conducting the air sampling and monitoring for all homes, and the town will be paying the company just under $20,000 for work done in all three areas. With help from a $10.1 million Disaster Relief Grant, some of the properties will be repurposed into new flood-safe homes and businesses. The first batch of homes will likely be demolished by July of this year. The next step for the Town of Union is for the board to decide next week which companies will be demolishing the homes in Endwell and Westover.
