An elderly woman was found dead in her home after firefighters extinguished a fire in her living room Thursday evening. Around 6:30 last night, Port Crane firefighters responded to a 911 call of a fire at 1082 Route 369, and found the woman lying in the entryway to her home.

Firefighters entered the house, which was heavily filled with smoke, and doused a small fire that had started on the woman’s living room couch. Emergency crews attempted to revive the woman, but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is expected to be performed today.

Officials for the Broome County Sheriff’s Office say nothing in the incident looks suspicious, and in most cases like this, death is caused by smoke inhalation. Sheriff’s and fire department officials are still investigating.

Crews from Port Crane, Chenango Forks, and Sanitaria Springs all responded to the scene.
