From Tioga County to the Mohawk Valley, heavy rains have caused flooding issues yet again.
There were problems on area roadways throughout Monday night and many parts of the Southern Tier experienced flash flooding on Monday, which shut down roads and even caused some evacuations. In Tioga County a debris-filled sewage pipe caused flooding along parts of Route 79. State crews worked hard to clear nearly a foot of water off, but the trouble didn’t stop there. Bob Keenan from the Richford Fire Department said they had to evacuate about a dozen homes due to flooding.
In Cortland, a bridge near the SPCA was flooded over with water and debris, but had been reopened by the evening. Emergency officials had to direct people around the area to protect drivers.
Nearby in Dryden, the elementary school sustained some flooding, along with homes on neighboring streets. Some of those roads were still closed early Monday evening. Crews say many people cooperated during the evacuations and that made it go a lot smoother. They’re urging people to stay away from moving water.
