Authorities have released the identity of the man who died after a fishing accident in the Susquehanna River near the Ouaquaga Bridge in the Town of Colesville Wednesday evening. 56-year-old Joseph Kapral Jr. of Albion, NY was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say it happened when the man was fishing with a friend. The two waded out near some rapids and the man fell into deeper current. Deputies say the friend was eventually able get the man to land where he performed CPR, but because there was no cell phone reception in the area, the friend had to leave to call for help.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the man had suffered a heart attack which contributed to his drowning. His death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
