On Friday, there will be several street closures and detours throughout Johnson City and people are advised to avoid the downtown area until mid-afternoon, as hundreds are expected to attend the funeral of Officer David Smith.
Streets will be closed from now until 2 o’clock. Main Street will be closed from St. Charles Street to the Johnson City Arch at Floral Avenue. Law enforcement will be redirecting all traffic at the corners of Main Street/St. Charles Street and Main Street/Arch Street. During this time, there will be access to Wilson Hospital and other businesses at Floral Avenue and Baldwin Street.
People will have open access to Wilson Hospital by coming from the Floral Avenue and railroad track area. Several UHS parking lots have been cleared today and will be closed throughout the funeral service. Those lots are located at Main & Baldwin Streets, Main Street adjacent to the Post Office, Baldwin & Arch Streets, and on-street parking will be very limited in the areas around the UHS Wilson campus. Valet parking services for UHS will be available at the Decker Center entrance to the medical center and at Wilson Square.
Buses will also be detouring today until 2 o’clock. All stops on Main Street, between Floral Ave to Route 201, will be temporarily closed. During this time, the #35 Binghamton/Endicott bus line will detour and travel on Floral Avenue between Main Street in Binghamton and Route 201 in Johnson City. Bus Stops along Floral Avenue will be observed by the #23 and #35 routes in Johnson City. The #17 Johnson City and #7 Clinton Street buses will have temporary delays along Prospect Street, Airport Road, CFJ Boulevard, and Lester Avenue between now and 2 o’clock. The #17 bus will not provide bus service on Brocton Street, North Arch Street, and Main Street in Johnson City until 2.
