Man Pleads Guilty in Crash that Injured Broome Deputy

Daniel T. Butash pleaded guilty Wednesday to Aggravated Vehicular Assault, and second-degree Assault, for a Feb. 1 motor vehicle crash in the Town of Vestal, which resulted in serious physical injury to Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Kristy Botsford.

  • 120.04-a Aggravated Vehicular Assault, a Class C Felony,
  • 120.05 Assault, in the second degree, a Class D Felony.

According to the plea, Butash was driving a 2018 Tesla while he had a Blood Alcohol Level of at least 0.18 percent. As a result of such intoxication, he operated the vehicle in a manner that caused serious physical injury to Deputy Botsford.


At the time of the crash, it was reported Butash was going the wrong direction on Route 17 in the Town of Vestal. Botsford was trapped in her sheriff’s deputy patrol car for an hour. Butash had recently rejected a plea deal with the Broome County District Attorney and was scheduled to stand trial.


Sentencing in Broome County Court is scheduled for Oct. 11, when Butash is expected to be sentenced to two and one-third to seven years in prison.
