An Endicott man has rejected a plea deal and now a trial appears more likely. 34-year-old Daniel Butash faces multiple charges including felony vehicular assault.
In February, he allegedly was driving the wrong way on Route 17 in the Town of Vestal when he plowed into a Broome County sheriff deputy’s vehicle, seriously injuring deputy Kristy Botsford.
Pinned inside her vehicle, Deputy Botsford was freed by emergency services personnel using the “jaws of life” tool in sub-zero temperatures.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Botsford was described by her colleagues as remaining “stoic and very brave” as rescue personnel worked to free her.
Prosecutors offered Butash a deal of 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison, but his attorney said no.
A trial date had not yet been scheduled.
Still in recovery, Botsford plans to return to her post and continue serving and protecting the people of Broome County as soon as her doctors allow.
