A new program to help students in five school districts learn about the advantages of eating locally grown products was unveiled by State Senator Fred Akshar on Friday. “Growing Our Agri-Future” will bring educators into classrooms in the five school districts to teach students all things agriculture, including its local impact and possible careers in the multi-billion dollar industry. An educator will go to each school throughout the school year with customized lessons to suit the needs of students in each district. Some classes might take a field trip to local farms or grow food at school gardens. The program starts this semester at the Harpursville, Maine-Endwell, Owego-Apalachin, Union-Endicott and Windsor districts. The money for the program comes from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Senator Akshar and Broome-Tioga BOCES.
