Two new apartment projects in Vestal and Binghamton will look to rent to nearly 900 college students. An expansion project in Vestal is looking to make housing for 816 more students at University Plaza. The Newman Development Group, a private Vestal-based company behind the expansion, currently rents to over 700 students in an apartment complex on the property near Binghamton University’s main campus. The separate project in Binghamton will transform a vacant office space into apartments for 52 students at the building at 162 Court Street. The company behind that project is AYA Properties out of Highland Mills, which owns the Court Street building. BU is currently under a long-term expansion plan, gradually growing its enrollment by 2,000 at the main campus in Vestal, looking to reach 17,000 students by 2017. The companies are looking to keep up with housing for the increasing number of students, and construction on the new housing projects is scheduled to begin in the new year with apartments ready for students for the fall semester of 2015.
