A nurse who recently began working at the Broome County Correctional Facility has been charged after an investigation found she had stolen 8 pain pills earlier this week.
Meghan M. Manning, age 31 of Troy, Pa., had been working at the Broome County Correctional Facility for approximately 3 months as a nurse employed by PrimeCare Medical, Inc., the facility’s medical provider.
At the end of Manning’s shift on Sunday, May 26, 2024, Manning reported to her superiors that a box (referred to as an eKit) containing 8 Acetaminophen with Codeine (300mg/30mg) pills had gone missing from the Correctional Facility Pharmacy Room. The Acetaminophen with Codeine pills are classified as a Schedule 3 and 5 narcotic analgesic combination drug. The value of the pills totaled $1.83.
An investigation by the Facility’s Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) found that Manning had taken the eKit containing the pills for personal use and then altered the inventory paperwork in an attempt to coverup the missing eKit.
Following the investigation, Meghan M. Manning was charged with:
– Falsifying Business Records in the 1st Degree, a Class E Felony
– Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
– Petit Larceny, a Class A Misdemeanor
Manning was processed and given an appearance ticket to appear at the Town of Dickinson Court to answer for her charges at a later date. Her employment with PrimeCare Medical, Inc. has been terminated.
All staff and volunteers at the Broome County Correctional Facility undergo background checks before working within the facility, and Manning had no known history of criminal activity or substance abuse.
“We hold all those charged with the health and safety of those in the Broome County Correctional Facility to the highest standards, and we depend on our medical staff to always act in the best interests of their patients and their colleagues,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “We have zero tolerance for any unauthorized medication or drugs either entering or leaving the facility, period. Excellent work by our investigators and staff who worked together to bring a quick resolution to this case.”
