From NYSEG at 9PM Sunday evening:
Binghamton, NY – Approximately 8,100 NYSEG customers in the company’s Binghamton Division (all or parts of Broome, Tioga, Cortland and Chenango counties) are currently without power as a result of damage from Thursday evening’s violent storm and a new round of storms last night that caused additional outages. The peak number of NYSEG customers in the Binghamton Division without power as a result of Thursday’s or Friday’s storm reached 25,557 Friday night.
NYSEG was dealt a setback this morning when a storm-damaged tree took out two circuits near the company’s Castle Gardens Substation in Vestal, leaving 3,300 customers without power. Most of those customers had power restored late this morning and the remainder had service restored at about 5 p.m.
As NYSEG crews, personnel from other utilities and contractors finish restoration work in other parts of the NYSEG service area they are coming to Binghamton to assist the dozens of crews already here.
Absent new storm-related power interruptions, NYSEG expects the majority of customers currently without service will have power restored tonight. Those in the hardest hit areas will have service restored through the day on Monday.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we complete our work,” said Walt Matyjas, director – electric distribution at NYSEG and RG&E. “We also owe our gratitude to the law enforcement agencies, fire departments, highway departments, emergency management personnel and local officials that have helped us immensely. Without their support, our work would be considerably more difficult.”
