Drug overdose deaths in Broome County have declined significantly in 2018. 31 deaths have been confirmed in Broome County. The total number of overdose deaths dropped from 66 in 2017, and 76 in 2016. Officials reviewed death certificates, police reports, coroner’s reports, and toxicology reports to obtain the statistics. They also interviewed addicts and family members of the deceased; and coordinated with police agencies who responded to overdose deaths. The average age was 40 with 71% male and 29% female. 56% of the deaths were in Binghamton with 16% in the Town of Union and 28% in the other towns. 94% died of heroin and/or opioids. Two additional deaths are still under investigation.
