Federal prosecutors said the son of state senator Tom Libous should be sentenced to 33 to 41 months in prison. According to court documents filed by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, prosecutors cited various reasons as to why Matthew Libous should be sentenced to prison time. Prosecutors said in court documents that Matthew Libous still owes money in back taxes. They said ‘Libous has not (paid), even though he has admitted civil liability for the outstanding taxes, and even though he has the financial means to pay them many times over’. They also accuse Matthew Libous of tampering with a court ordered drug test, by drinking large amounts of water to produce a false-negative test. In another reason, the prosecutors claim he has not truly accepted responsibility for his actions, as he continues to shift the blame for his crimes and continues to misstate the record.
