Broome County Judge Joseph Cawley has ruled that the retrial of Aaron Powell will be handled by a Special Prosecutor. Powell was convicted of the murder of his wife, Christina Powell, and her friend Mario Maschiarelli in 2016, but a state appeals court reversed Powell’s conviction and granted him a retrial. During conferences between the District Attorney and the defense counsel for Powell, a possible conflict of interest emerged. There are two attorneys, now working in the District Attorneys office, that had previously worked for the firm that represented Powell in his first trial. Judge Cawley stated that attorney Christopher Grace will prosecute the case.
