The New York State Police and the Department of Transportation continue to work together targeting reckless and distracted drivers in active work zones.
On Thursday, October 1, 2020 the initiative “Operation Hardhat” took place in two different work zones on Interstate 81 in Broome County. During the initiative, a trooper is embedded in a work zone and dressed as a DOT worker. The trooper watches for vehicle and traffic violations such as speeding, operating an electronic device, not wearing a seatbelt or failing to follow the “Move Over” Law.
A total of 33 tickets were issued:
Speeding – 10
Cell Phone Use – 9
No Seatbelt – 6
Move Over – 1
Other – 7
Motorists are urged to drive responsibly in work zones. Please follow the posted signage. Move over a lane when it is possible or when encountering vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights.
As of mid-September, over 1,600 tickets have been issued throughout New York. Last year, 1,048 tickets were issued. The initiative began in July and continues through construction season through the month of November.
