Residents living near the National Pipe and Plastics plant in the Town of Union completed affidavits last night to try to shut the plant down. They said the facility is affecting traffic, producing a strong odor that may include toxic gases, and creating loud noises that are disrupting its neighbors. Dozens of residents sued the plant back in November, seeking an injunction to close the facility, which is one of the largest PVC pipe producers in the United States. Neighbors said there were mild improvements in recent months, but, residents said bright lights and a smell, similar to sulfur, still keeps them awake at night. People living near the plant also said their property values had decreased. Zoning laws currently allow the plant to operate at the location.
National Pipe and Plastics Inc. also has offices located in Vestal.
