Vestal Police patrols responded to a business alarm Tuesday night at Matco Electric, 3913 Gates Road.

Officers discovered a burglary in progress. Officers could not get into the building but attempted to contain the suspect while waiting for other officers and a key holder. Due to the size of the building, the suspect got away.

From evidence found at the scene, Vestal police officers and investigators identified the suspect as Jason Canfield Jr., 18, of Johnson City, NY.

Later in the evening, Canfield was taken into custody without incident at his residence in Johnson City. He was charged with burglary in the third degree, a Class D felony, arraigned and remanded to the Broome County jail. Additional charges are anticipated, police said Wednesday in a news replease.

Vestal police were assisted by Binghamton University Police, Broome County Sheriff’s Office and Binghamton Police K9 Division.
