Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce the first $10 million in funding today for a pharmacy school at Binghamton University. State Senator Tom Libous and BU President Harvey Stenger say the expected funding will be a stamp of approval for a project they believe can bring new research dollars to the Southern Tier. The overall construction of the new pharmacy school is expected to be between sixty and sixty-five million dollars. Libous says that the governor has made it clear that the pharmacy school project will be moving forward, and Cuomo is expected to announce the funding during his budget presentation today. Even with the announcement of the initial funding, the pharmacy school would still be years from completion. BU officials say the plans for the school would be based at a new building which would include about 40,000 square feet of occupied space. The most likely site for the school would be in the Village of Johnson City near UHS Wilson Medical Center. The current plans would include the school having 240 fully-enrolled graduates students over four years, with 60 in each class, and another 60 to 100 Ph.D. students that would conduct pharmaceutical research, along with 30 to 40 faculty members.
