The Town of Vestal is enhancing their security at the Vestal Highway Department after being robbed of scrap metal twice by the same man.
The town spent more than $5,000 on a video security system at the highway department’s building on Glenwood Road. Officials say the highway department was first robbed last summer, when a man stole thousands of dollars worth of manhole covers.
After being arrested and spending 3 months in jail, upon his release the same man returned to the highway department and tried to steal more scrap metal. He was arrested for a second time. The area is too large to be fenced in, so the video system was the best option for the town.
Vestal Police are also beginning to increase patrols along Glenwood Road.
