Vestal police reported Thursday night that Lanny Sullivan, 66, of Vestal, was killed in a one-car crash Wednesday. Around 3:45pm, Vestal police responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident in the area of Ridge Road and Castleman Road. Arriving officers found the vehicle had traveled off the road and through a field before crashing into a row of trees.

Nearby residents were assisting and had helped to remove an eight-year old passenger from the vehicle prior to police arrival. As a precaution, the passenger was transported to Wilson Hospital via Vestal ambulance and was later released with only minor injuries from his seat belt.

The vehicle’s operator needed to be extricated by the Vestal Fire Department and due to the extent of his injuries a medi-vac helicopter was requested. The operator was identified as Lanny Sullivan, 66, of Vestal. Sullivan was transported by helicopter to Wilson Hospital and pronounced deceased after arrival.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing but the evidence gathered so far leads Vestal police to believe that Sullivan suffered a medical emergency while driving which led to the accident. The results of an autopsy, scheduled for Thursday, may determine a more specific cause of the accident and his death.
