A woman pulled from the icy waters of the Susquehanna River yesterday has died. Shortly after 8:30 AM, police and emergency crews answered a missing person call on Loretta Lane in Castle Gardens. Investigators spotted a trail behind the home, leading to the river, where they saw the woman in the water beneath a layer of ice. Broome County Water Rescue, Vestal fire and EMS crews broke through the ice and took her to Wilson hospital where she was pronounced dead. The woman has been identified as 54-year old Christine Mapes of Vestal. Police are still trying to determine how she ended up in the river, but they say her death is believed to be accidental.
