The expansion of Vestal’s Rail Trail is expected to be open by next week. The 1.7-mile expansion project of the trail adds a stretch for runners and walkers that goes from Pumphouse Road off North Main Street to Castle Gardens Road. The Town of Vestal is hoping for an opening date of July 1st. All that remains to be done before the trail can open is putting signage in place and other finishing touches. The project was mostly paid for using federal grants and came in at a cost of $2.5 million, about $900,000 of which was used to build a new pedestrian bridge over Choconut Creek. There are already plans for a second expansion of the trail which would run from African Road toward Sam’s Club on the Vestal Parkway.
