Veteran’s Day Observed Throughout Region

Owego and Tioga County will mark Veterans Day 2014 at 11 a.m. today at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial on its 27th anniversary of dedication. Veterans request all citizens to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. on the 96th anniversary of the 11th hour of the 11th day when World War One ended. Also at 11 a.m. church bells will toll 11 times and fire sirens will sound to salute veterans. The theme is Honoring All Who Served and Purple Heart Recipients. The community is invited to attend and thank the veterans for their service and sacrifices including Tioga County’s POWs and MIAs. The ceremony will also include the posting of colors, a singing of the national anthem, the laying of wreaths, a rifle salute, a roll call, and Vietnam Veteran and Newark Valley Deputy Historian Jerry Marsh will talk about Civil War Soldiers in Tioga County. At 4 p.m., the Newark Valley Historical Society with a free dinner will honor veterans of Richford, Berkshire and Newark Valley at the Newark Valley Fire Station. And in Candor it’s the Veterans Day Open House from 4 to 7 at the Candor Arden Kelsey Post 907 American Legion in Candor.

A Veterans Day parade will take place today in Binghamton. It takes off from American Legion Post 80 at 2:00 p.m. In Endicott, a Veterans Day memorial ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Veteran Park across from Union-Endicott High School. A parade will take place on Washington Avenue in Endicott at 7:00 p.m.
