From trees and power lines down, to flash flooding across roadways, sweeping thunderstorms left plenty of damage and water in their wake. The Town of Lisle declared a state of emergency over a 13 hour period that’s now expired. It began at 6 PM last night, and ended at 7 AM this morning. The Whitney Point School District even closed today as a result of storm damage.
Near the Cider Mill in Endicott, a green sedan and a woman inside it were stuck in flood waters that rose half way up to the car. The call came out before 5:30 p.m. for a woman who was stuck inside the car under a railroad overpass along Nanticoke Avenue. According to the emergency communication reports, she made the call as the waters rose around her. She was eventually rescued by emergency crews. Traffic was diverted around the underpass until the water dissipated. In the town of Union, the wind knocked out power for thousands when it snapped two power lines along Hooper Road. NYSEG arrived at approximately 9:15 p.m. to fix the down wires.
Town of Union Supervisor Rose Sotak said the downed lines caused the town’s annual 9/11 Memorial event to be canceled. It will not be rescheduled.
