Broome town judge releases Syracuse man charged with first degree rape in Johnson City

The town judge in Lisle in northern Broome County released a bail eligibie suspect charged with first degree rape, forcible compulsion, a Class B felony.

Judge Steven G. Tillotson released Athonio N. Bethune, 26, of Syracuse, from custody without setting bail.  Johnson City police, who arrested and charged Bethune, said first degree rape is a qualifying offense that allows judges to set bail for the charge.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Johnson City Police Department received a report of a sexual assault at a location within the Village. Officers responded to the location and located a 23-year-old female victim as well as Bethune.

JCPD detectives were able to collect evidence related to this incident and charged Bethune. He was taken to central arraignment and arraigned before Judge Steven G. Tillotson (Town of Lisle). Tillotson released Bethune from custody without setting bail, emphasized Johnson City police in a news release.
