A new charity is offering to pay for doctor ordered breast MRIs for women who are not covered by insurance or cannot afford them.
The Mary Lukacs MRI Fund is named for a Pulteney resident, who died of breast cancer at the age of 50 after two bouts with the disease.
Her family believes an earlier MRI exam could have helped Lukacs, but the test wasn’t recommended until cancer cells had seriously advanced.
The MRI is used with breast cancer survivors at risk of a re-occurrence and other high risk patients. It is a much more expensive procedure than the more well known mammogram, but can identify cancers in areas the mammogram cannot see.
