Reports yesterday indicated that there was a strong smell of gas in the Joseph Street, Horseheads neighborhood well before the 9:15AM explosion.
A neighbor called NYSEG to report a very strong smell of gas at about 1AM.
NYSEG responded quickly, but there is no indication of what actions were the result of the call.
At his press conference Wednesday evening, undersheriff Bill Schrom asked that anyone who smelled gas before the explosion to please call the Chemung County Sheriff’s office at 607-735-8600.
NYSEG has had no comment on the explosion as of yet.
