A charging device in an electrical outlet has been determined to have started the massive fire in Ovid on Tuesday night.

According to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, a resident reported plugging in the device and noticed it smoking a few hours later.

The fire destroyed six businesses including the Ovid Big M Supermarket and Italian Kitchen. There were also 11 apartments involved in the fire, leaving many families without a home.

There were no serious injuries from the fire, but a few firefighters did sustain minor injuries from fighting the blaze in the extremely cold weather during the incident.

Over 200 firefighters and first responders worked to put out the fire.
