Chemung County Sheriff’s Deputy injured in I-86 incident

A Chemung County Sheriff’s deputy was injured after a tractor trailer hit a patrol vehicle that was parked at the scene of another crash on Interstate 86 on Friday.’

The sheriff’s deputy sustained minor injuries after the patrol vehicle was hit near the Town of Big Flats just after 7 p.m. on Dec. 27.

The deputy was called to the scene of a single car crash on Interstate 86, and was parked at the back of the crash scene partially on the highway’s shoulder and partially in the driving lane at the time of the incident.

As the deputy was about to get out of the patrol car, a tractor-trailer hauling milk didn’t move over as it approached the scene and hit the back of the police car.

The deputy’s car was sent off the roadway and down an embankment.

The deputy was taken to Guthrie Corning Hospital.

The tractor trailer driver received tickets for failure to yield for an emergency vehicle and other violations.
