The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office updated the public on a school threat that was circulating on social media on Monday morning.
On Sunday, at about 11:25 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office and 911 center began to receive numerous calls about a social media post threatening a school shooting in the Elmira City School District through various social media websites.
The threat of violence evolved to include other schools throughout Chemung, Tompkins and Broome Counties. The threats from Chemung County were investigated by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office and determined to not be credible.
The sheriff’s office believes the incidents may also be related to a swatting hoax circulating across local counties and nationwide.
The sheriff’s office worked closely with the New York State Intelligence Center and New York State Police to investigate the threats.
Students and parents are encouraged to notify officials with any concerns by using the Speak up for Safety email at [email protected] or by calling 607-703-2661.
Anyone with information pertaining to these threats should call the sheriff’s office at 607-737-2933.
