Chemung couple facing animal cruelty charges

A couple from Chemung is facing several counts of animal cruelty following an investigation by Elmira Animal Control and New York State Police.

New York State Police responded to Simkin Road and Passmore Road in the Town of Chemung on Monday for a report of an unusual noise coming from a wooded area.

Troopers found a stock trailer with a horse and five pigs parked in the woods.

Elmira Animal Control responded to the scene and discovered the animals were in severe condition, with one pig deceased and the horse emaciated.

The horse would be humanely euthanized, and the pigs were transported to the Elmira Animal Shelter for evaluation and treatment.

Following an investigation, Nickolas and Kelly Stevens were charged with six counts of cruelty of animals, a Class A misdemeanor.
