A deer caused a pileup on Interstate 86 near the Steuben and Chemung County line on Wednesday evening.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, a Ford SUV was traveling east on the highway when it hit a deer near Exit 48 shortly before 5:50 p.m. The car pulled over to the right side of the highway, but was partially in the roadway and unable to move.
A Jeep Wrangler with three people inside pulled over to help the driver of the SUV. While both vehicles were stopped on the side of the road, a GMC truck with three people inside slowed down due to the deer in the road. The truck was rear-ended by a Honda Odyssey. The collision caused significant damage to both cars.
The driver of the first vehicle that struck the deer sustained an injury to her arm and was transported to the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Several other people were also taken to area hospitals with injuries.
According to police, no injuries were considered life-threatening.
