The Elmira City Council passed a law last week that will allow Elmira Police and Code Enforcement to fine or even shut down unlicensed cannabis shops.

According to WETM-TV, the law allows local police and code enforcement to conduct inspections on businesses, including vehicles, suspected of selling unlicensed cannabis in the city. Inspections would be done during business hours and would then be followed up with a cease order.

Illegal items found inside the businesses would be taken and the stores would be shut down and sealed until a hearing with the business owner is held.

Fines can also be issued from $100 to $10,000 a day, with a maximum penalty of $25,000.

Local Law No. 3 passed in a 6-1 vote on Monday, Dec. 30th.
