The Elmira City School District will be adding a new weapons detection system to three schools starting today (Wednesday, Sept. 18) following recent online threats towards schools.

The new system will be implemented at Elmira High School, Ernie Davis Academy and Broadway Academy.

The system, which is called Open Gate, will be placed at the entrance of each building. It’s similar to a system used at large sporting events, concerts and amusements parks.

The decision to implement the new system comes after several threats of school shootings were circulating across social media this week. The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office investigated the threats and deemed them to not be credible.
