An Elmira manufacturing business has been ordered to pay back nearly $150,000 as part of an unpaid sick leave settlement.
SouthernTier Custom Fabricators, Inc., which manufactures sheet metal, was ordered to pay back the money in restitution to around 200 unionized workers, who were not paid sick leave during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The New York Attorney General’s Office said an investigation revealed that between September of 2020 and April of 2022 the business withheld paid sick leave to the union workers, while allowing non-union employees sick leave.
The settlement will be paid to the union workers from the Sheet Metal Workers Local 112 and Sheet Metal Workers Local 58.
