A total of 14 people were arrested during a pair of related disturbances in downtown Elmira and the Southside early Sunday morning.
Elmira police officers were called to the 200 block of West Water Street just before 1:30 a.m. for a report of a disturbance during a party at a local bar with over 300 guests.
After police arrived multiple fights broke out in the middle of West Water Street. Officers attempted to stop the fights, but were surrounded by a large crowd. Police said the incident became more unruly with more fights breaking out on the block.
The officers called for backup and were dealing with the crowd for more than an hour before the fights broke up and the crowd left.
During this incident, 9 people were arrested and are facing charges, including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and harassment.
Police then responded to the 400 block of West Hudson Street at around 3:30 a.m. for a report of a disturbance. Officers said the people involved were some of the same individuals who were part of the West Water Street incident.
As police were attempting to clear West Hudson Street, some people became unruly and disruptive, resulting in five more arrests.
Elmira Police were assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Elmira Heights Police, Horseheads Police and New York State Police.
