The Elmira School districts which were on lockdown Tuesday morning have had their lockdowns lifted. The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office told the schools, including Southside High School, Notre Dame High School, and several elementary schools on the southside, that they could safely lift the lockdown status. Elmira City School District officials first decided to put the schools on lockdown when there was a report of an armed suspect on the loose in the area. The suspect is wanted for an armed robbery at Uncle Jack’s convenience store on Maple Avenue and Cedar Street in Southport. The man, who has not been apprehended, threatened a cashier at the store with a weapon which he did not show. He was seen on a security camera that was installed following a burglary last week at the same store. The investigation is ongoing.
