A fundraiser will be held this week in honor of the squirrel who was seized and euthanized from an animal sanctuary in Pine City.
Peanut the squirrel and a raccoon were both seized by the Department of Environmental Conservation and Chemung County Department of Health on Wednesday. The agencies announced that the animals had been euthanized and were going to be tested for rabies on Friday.
Mark and Daniela Longo operate Peanut’s Freedom Farm, which is home to more than 300 animals who were neglected or homeless. The sanctuary was named in honor of their pet squirrel, who they rescued seven years ago and have kept as a pet since. Videos of Peanut have gone viral online, with more than 1 million followers across multiple social media platforms.
Ill Eagle Taphouse, located at 200 East Church Street in Elmira, will hold a fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday. The event will feature music from the Rascal Kings. There will be a $5 cover charge, and a portion of drink and food sales will go to Peanut’s Freedom Farm.
