A Chemung County jury returned a guilty verdict in the trial of Eddie Marte, who was accused of torturing and murdering Juan Gotay in Elmira in 2021.
Marte was convicted of first degree murder and first degree kidnapping following a trial that lasted less than two weeks.
According to WENY-TV, the Chemung County District Attorney said Marte was the ringleader of four defendants who tortured and killed Gotay.
Gotay’s body was found in a remote area of Potter County, Pennsylvania, bound and mutilated in April of 2021.
Marte’s co-defendants, Thomas Bovaird, Malik Weems and Kavon Sanders, all testified against him in the trial. They have all pleaded guilty to lesser charges for their roles in the case and are awaiting sentencing.
Marte will be sentenced on July 12th.
