The corrections officers who are striking at the Elmira Correctional Facility and others across the state of New York received a text from the New York State Office of Employee Relations threatening that if they did not return to work, they will be fired.
The text says any officer or sergeant who did not return to work on Saturday will receive a health insurance termination on Monday, and termination of employment notices for AWOL employees will begin to be sent out on Sunday.
The text also threatened contempt sanctions, including fines and imprisonment against those that continue to participate in what the department called an “illegal strike.”
A consent agreement was agreed to between the state, Department of Corrections and the union was announced on Thursday. However, the striking corrections officers in Elmira have rejected the deal and remained on the picket line.
