The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents about a new phone scam that has been reported in the region.

According to the sheriff’s office, individuals are receiving calls claiming to be from Amazon, stating there has been an incorrect or suspicious purchase on their account. The caller then transfers the individual to a so-called Justice System Department, where they are informed that an officer will be contacting them.

A second phone call is then received with the caller ID displaying a number that appears to belong to the Addison Police Department. The caller identifies themselves as Brian Morse and threatens to dispatch an officer to the individual’s residence.

The sheriff’s office is reminding the public that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never contact you by phone to demand money, nor will they make threats related to retail transactions, including from Amazon.

You should not provide any personal or financial information and should hang up immediatley and contact your local police department.
