One man was shot by police following a suspected domestic incident on East Water Street early Friday morning.

Elmira Police responded to the 300 block of East Water Street at around 4:37 a.m. on Friday. They found a woman with a leg injury, who was crying and visibly upset. She told officers that a man in the apartment had assaulted her and held her against her will.

Officers discovered that an order of protection was in place against the man, who was allowed to gather some clothes from the apartment before being taken into custody. At that time, the man allegedly grabbed a gun. Officers attempted to use a taser on the suspect, but it was not effective.

The suspect hid in the closet before coming out and allegedly pointing the gun at officers. One officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect. The man was seriously injured but is in stable condition.

No officers were injured in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
