A refrigerated tractor trailer caught fire on Interstate 86 in the Town of Horseheads in the early morning hours on Sunday.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in just after midnight. Deputies found a 53-foot trailer fully engulfed. The driver, who is from Canada, reported seeing smoke coming from his trailer and was able to safely pull over and disconnect his truck.
Firefighters from Elmira, Horseheads, Town & Country and Breesport arrived on scene and had the fire extinguished by 1:30 a.m.
Deputies were assisted in highway closure by New York State DOT, Horseheads Police, and Elmira Heights Police.
The highway was temporarily closed from exit 54 to exit 56.
