A Chemung County Sheriff’s deputy has been killed in a crash that also claimed another driver’s life.
Deputy Jeffrey Alexander, 26, lost control while driving on State Route 427 in the Town of Ashland Sunday morning.
Preliminary reports show that Alexander’s patrol vehicle swerved into the opposite lane and hit an oncoming vehicle head-on.
Deputy Alexander was taken to Arnot Ogden Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene. Their name is not being released at this time until police can notify family members.
State Route 427 was closed for most of the day as State Police did reconstruction work at the crash site.
They are now handling the investigation and at this point, the only thing they can say is that both vehicles were traveling below 55 miles per hour.
It is still not clear what caused Deputy Alexander to lose control.
