Two people were airlifted following a two-car crash in Southport on Friday afternoon.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened just before 3 pm on the 2300 block of South Broadway Street.
The investigation revealed that a Kia was traveling north at a high rate of speed when it crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and into the path of a GMC Denali.
When deputies arrived, they found the Kia and the Denali about 100 yards apart with severe damage.
The driver of the Kia, a 34-year-old man from Barton, was trapped inside his vehicle with serious injuries. His passenger, a 40-year-old woman, was being treated on scene by first responders. Both were rescued from the vehicle and airlifted to the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
The driver and passenger of the GMC were taken to the hospital for treatment and have been released.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing with charges pending.
The New York State Police also responded to the scene along with firefighters from Southport, Pine city and Webbs Mills, Erway Ambulance and Guthrie Air.
