The woman who killed a World War II Veteran in Corning over four years ago was sentenced in Steuben County Court on Wednesday.

According to WENY-TV, Brenda McKay, who is now 55 years old, killed 100-year-old Gerald Early in his First Street home in Corning on June 6, 2020.

McKay was a former unofficial caretaker of Early’s and lived in an apartment around the corner from his home.  She had been let go in the spring of that year due to COVID-19 concerns and Early’s age and health.

She pleaded guilty on Oct. 9 to a manslaughter charge. Two psychiatrists with the prosecution and defense agreed that McKay was under extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the incident.

McKay will serve 17 years in a New York State Prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
